Visual Components and Shape Process Automation – The journey from scratch to excellence, examples and reflections

SPA Europe has for several years used simulation as an integrated part of the RFQ and sales phases. What began as a way to verify concepts and layouts has now become a natural part of how we develop and execute our projects.

In the quotation phase, we use simulation to test flows, logic, and capacity before submitting a bid. This allows us to take on larger and more complex projects with better control over risk and functionality. For the customer, this means increased transparency and a clearer picture of how the system will actually operate.

Today, we also use simulations in the early design phase, primarily for logic testing and capacity analyses. By combining Visual Components with external robot simulation software and PLC/HMI simulations, we create a virtual environment where robot movements, control logic, and material flows can be tested before anything is physically built (or even afterwards for troubleshooting or improvements). This allows us to detect issues early and make better technical decisions.

More recently, we have also begun using the models after delivery. In a recently completed project, we upgraded an existing palletizing program entirely offline. The new solution was developed and validated in the simulation environment without disrupting the customer’s ongoing production. This provided the customer with a secure upgrade and gave us the opportunity to further develop and create additional sales for an already installed system in a controlled manner.

For us, simulation is now a practical working tool throughout the entire project lifecycle.
