Meet Tarmo, Programming Wizard at Visual Components

Wonder what it's like working at Visual Components? In our Career Stories series, we introduce you to the rock stars who make up our great company.

Approximately one year ago, in August 2018, Tarmo joined the software development team at Visual Components (VC) and he has been working in software development ever since.

He has a great passion for his career, so much so that when he is not busy tackling problems with C++ or C# at work, you’ll find him prototyping other areas of programming.

Tarmo is also a father of two kids, and he enjoys spending time with his family and goes fishing with his children. Although he considers fishing as a casual hobby, Tarmo would still be able to catch a big “hauki” (Finnish for pike). He likes listening to and collecting different kinds of music videos on YouTube, including anime music videos. Tarmo also has a talent for drawing, you can find one of his drawings below!

How did you end up working at Visual Components?

That’s kind of funny. My brother was working at VC while I was looking for a job. I asked him about the company, was it good, did it match my criteria, and then I decided to apply. Eight years ago I worked in the same company as him, so it was an amazing surprise that I followed in his footsteps for a second time!

But the main reason why I picked the company is my interest in 3D desktop visualization software development. At my previous job, I was also working on embedded software for mobile devices. However, I wanted to work with PC software, which is more complex to develop and debug.

What are your main responsibilities?

I have been working on software building and integration issues, including installation software improvements.

What has made you stay at Visual Components?

I like everything that I do at the moment. I also find that VC has a really good atmosphere. Everyone is polite, and always approaches me with a smile. I think it’s amazing what VC has achieved from a company organization perspective.

Can you tell us about your regular day as a software developer in Visual Components?

I live about 2 hours away from work so most of the time I work remotely, and I only come to the office once or twice a week.

I normally begin the day checking if builds still work normally, and continue from where I left off the day before. I want to keep the software as stable as possible, so I have strong focus on quality. Currently, I’m working with Cloud development on top of Linux.

What do you enjoy most about working at Visual Components?

I like challenges. The more complex the problem is, the more interesting it is to solve. The development area here is quite widespread, it has so many puzzle pieces to solve.
