Wonder what it's like working at Visual Components? In our Career Stories series, we introduce you to the rock stars who make up our great company.

One year ago, Laura started working at Visual Components (VC) as a Marketing Event Coordinator, but because of her agile event planning and organization, she was promoted to Marketing Event Manager in June 2019. Laura is the most trusted person when it comes to event marketing at Visual Components.

Outside of work, Laura has a great passion for cooking, and she has been attending several cooking classes in her free time. She also enjoys exercising and doing yoga. Laura is always willing to try new things, for example, she once joined an action painting workshop and tried circus school!

How did you end up in Visual Components?

Before joining VC, I had worked in a big company for several years, and big corporations usually come with lots of hierarchies. Slowly but steadily, I started having the feeling that I wanted to try something else. Even though my main tasks in the previous company were related to marketing and sales, I also had many opportunities to work in event planning, which I really enjoyed.

I started to dream of doing events as a full-time job, and that’s when I saw VC’s job advertisement. It described exactly what I wanted to do: global event management in a very international work environment.

What has made you stay at Visual Components?

I have been here for almost one year now, and I think this is the best decision I’ve ever made, career-wise. I’m really happy with what I’m doing, and it feels like my dream job. VC has a very open working culture, and I believe that if I would like to develop my skills in different areas, there will always be room for discussion.

What do you do as a Marketing Event Manager at Visual Components?

I am responsible for our trade shows and seminars as the main part of my job. Plus, I’m also taking care of our Partner Days and other internal events, such as upcoming VC 20th anniversary this December.

What does your regular day look like?

My day-to-day work can vary a lot, but it requires to have quite good time-management skills. I need to be able to handle the arrangement and organization of events that are happening now, but also be able to manage and plan the following year simultaneously.

Sometimes I spend the whole day with the different teams agreeing on the events’ expectations. Other days I travel to the trade shows to make sure that everything goes as planned.

What do you enjoy most about your day?

My colleagues, and also travelling to the events I’ve organized 🙂

What about the best part of your work?

The best part is that I am working with wonderful, talented people who are professionals in their fields. Teamwork is crucial here, and there are always people who know other things better than me. Even though sometimes it is challenging to work in a team and to take all opinions into account, I personally really enjoy it because I can learn a lot from others.

Do you have a fun fact or favourite anecdote from working at VC?

This might be boring for some people but I love our lunch breaks, when people from different teams have lunch together, laugh and talk about everything.

When it comes to work, one of the most rewarding experiences for me has been attending US tradeshows where we were exhibiting at. These were the first US shows I’ve ever organized, and their success gave me a tremendous sense of achievement. Although there is always room for improvement, I am still really proud of myself.

What advice would you give someone who’d like to work with us?

Be who you are. Even though skills are important, your personality is even more valuable. Being a team player, having the right spirit, organizational skills and time management will help you. Plus, you can learn a lot while working here, so it is crucial to have an open mind and a positive attitude.

Can you describe in one sentence what it’s like to work here?

After having worked in big corporations and experiencing the ups and downs, I’d say that working in VC is like coming home.
